National and Popular Flowers in Russia

Apart from gratifying human senses aesthetically and serving the purpose of expressing feelings between people, flowers also serve as a national symbol for nations. Just like national flower of the USA is Rose, national flower of Russia is chamomile. There is deep meaning and significance to the choice of the national flower by every nation.

Russian people has a very deep connection with this flower, anchored in their culture, literature, songs, and even folk medicine. Chamomile flower originated  in West Asia and then spread to many other areas. It now grows prolifically throughout the territory of Russia and many other countries. 

It is a special pleasure for any Russian person to walk through the field of chamomiles. It is just this special relationship that they have with this flower that is rooted deeply in the culture.  Many people living in  villages, suburbs, or those who have “datcha” have chamomiles in their garden.  

There is even a folk tradition of using a chamomile for fortune-telling. Every Russian girl plays this little fortune-telling game in which she plucks off one petal at a time saying “loves me, not loves me, loves me, not loves me” with every petal plucked off. The last petal is the answer to the question whether He loves her or not.

A bouquet of chamomiles is always a wonderful way to connect with a Russian person. Nowadays you can order a bouquet of chamomiles to be delivered to most cities in Russia and bring special joy to a recipient with something culturally meaningful for them.

 As for popular flowers in Russia, the list would probably start with tulips, lilies, carnations, roses and peonies. Most of these flowers traditionally grow in people’s gardens and and when an occasion occurs make a beautiful bouquet. One can still find Russian babushkas (grannies) selling tulips, lilies, peonies, gladioluses from their gardens starting early spring and until September with one flower succeed another according to the season.

Normally those flowers sold in the streets are considerably cheaper then the ones in the flowers shops, but that comes with fewer conveniences. If you  are not there walking down the street where there are a few babushkas with flowers,  ordering flowers delivery from a local flower shop or flowers delivery company is the only option for you to get flowers to a recipient. Flower shops have a wider variety of flowers including those not in season locally. Besides, bouquets made by professional florists simply look more presentable and professional which any recipient most likely will appreciate. 

Interestingly enough, roses do not seem to be the most popular flowers in Russia as they are in many other countries. Google and Yandex search analysis show that the most popular search words among flowers are lilies, orchids, violets, but not roses. Flowers delivery companies confirm that the most popular flowers during the peak season of March the 8 (International Women’s Day) are tulips, with half of all flowers sold in that period being tulips. However, this statistics reflects only a part of the year, as tulips are not available beyond spring.
