Making Rainbow Roses at Home

Rainbow rose

Did you ever wonder how on earth those rainbow roses turn out like this? Is it a cultivar that just grows with those colorful petals? Or is it a certain trick that florist do to color each petal into a different color?

So if you were really wondering about it, we are here to tell you that those roses do not grow like this, they are artificially colored.  No, it is not what you thought. The florist does not sit there for hours painting each petal with the paint and brush.

But it does require some work and some time. Ready to find out and try to make rainbow roses at home? Then, this blog post is for you.

To make rainbow roses, you will need:

  • White or beige rose.
  • Food coloring.
  • Vases, popsicle mold, or similar narrow containers.
  • Sharp scissors, knife, or blade.
  • Water.

  1.   Choose the right rose.

    White rose
For the better result, take a white or a very light colored rose that hasn’t opened yet or just starting to open. This will allow enough time before the rose starts to wither.

The best cultivar to use is “Vendala” rose, because this rose absorbs the colorants perfectly. However, if “Vendala” rose is not available, try any white or beige roses, it might still work, but the color will not be that vibrant as with the “Vendala” rose.

  2. Prepare the rose.

    Trimming the stem
Measure the rose against the vase and trim the stem to the desired length.  Do it at an angle and under the running water. This will keep the vessels open longer which will ensure a better absorption of color.

  3. Split the stem.

Split the stem of the rose
Use a very sharp knife to split the stem; a dull blade can cause the stem to brake.

Split the stem into 2 to 4 sections. The number of sections will determine the number of colors in your rose. However, too many sections carry the risk of weakening the stem.

  4. Making colored water

    Colored water
Choose tall narrow containers and fill them with water. The number of containers should be the same as the number of sections you split the rose stem into.  It is better if the containers are narrow and sturdy; the split sections of the stem will need to stretch into each container, and with the wider containers there it might be harder to do.

Add food coloring to the water (different color to each container) and mix well. To achieve brighter colors, add more color.

  5. Place each step section into a separate container.

    Stem in colored water
Be very gentle when positioning the stem sections, the split stem is easy to break if too much force is applied.
Make sure that the rose is not falling down and can stand with stem sections in different containers.

  6. Let the rose sit for a few days.

Although you can start noticing some change in color in about half an hour, you would need to let the rose sit for a few days to achieve the bright colors.
The stem will be absorbing the colored water. As the colored water travels travels up the stem and to the petals, the color will start appearing in the petals.

If you are patient enough, you will be rewarded with a bright rainbow rose.
